Merriam-Webster defines republic as a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president.
According to Wikipedia (15 August 2016), “147 of the world’s 206 sovereign states use the word “republic” as part of their official names.” However, it also notes that “not all of these are republics in the sense of having elected governments.”
