Concentration/Curriculum Overview: The MAP from the University of Laval is designed to train public managers and analysts. The program offers an approach covering several disciplines, notably economics, political science and management. There is a significant emphasis placed on research methods and interpretation. The program is designed for those who have or wish to pursue roles in public management, analytical roles in the planning and evaluation of services, or conduct research in the public, semi-public or private sectors. During the first year of the program, students take a series of mandatory courses. In the second year of the program, students pursue optional courses and participate in an intervention project with a public sector organization. Students with prior experience in the public sector also must pass an additional examination. The MAP – Public Management is designed for public managers who must find innovative solutions to provide high-quality citizen services. Students in this program will be familiarized with concrete challenges faced by public managers and will master the way in which to address them. PEACO scores calculated on this page refer to this variation of Laval University’s MAP degree. In each of the four variations of the University’s MA in Public Affairs, students may choose to concentrate their optional courses, intervention project and thesis (if applicable) in one of eight concentrations: industrial organization, international economy, public economy, econometrics, the analysis of public policy, foreign policy and international relations, political philosophy and sociology, and public management. In all non-thesis variations of the MAP, students are offered the opportunity to complete an “international profile” which provides students with financial and logistical support to complete a semester abroad at a partner university. The University of Laval notes that each of its MAP degrees opens doors to various public functions for students as a result of partnerships with various government organizations. Further, the University notes that large public sector retirements contemplated by the Gouvernement du Quebec’s 2004-2007 human resource management plan will likely provide students with many employment opportunities. The MAP degree is aimed at teaching a wide range of skills that apply to managers in multiple positions in various organizations, from junior managers to senior managers to diplomats, in local as well as international organizations, in the public, semi-public or private sectors.
