A behavioural competency is an attribute, knowledge, skill, ability, or other characteristic that contributes to successful job performance.

According to the Employment Studies Institute:

The word behavioral competency is widely used in business and personnel psychology and refers to the behaviors that are necessary to achieve the objective of an Organization. Behavioral competency is also something you can measure and lists of competencies form a common language for describing how people perform in different situations. Every job or positions can be described in terms of hey behavioral competencies. This means that they can be used for all terms of assessment, including performance appraisals, training needs analysis and of course selection.
